The hallmark of a UK Assay Office is proof that an item (in all its parts) is of the standard of fineness indicated by the hallmark struck on that item.

All solid gold items of jewellery are hallmarked, and most of my silver items are hallmarked, even though they are below weight thresholds (7.78grams for silver).
